7 Quick Takes Friday (vol 5)

1.

Still working my night job this week. My lovely friend Brittany who just got back from India (lucky!!) came in last night to work a shift and she gave me a Christmas gift. Correction, she gave me the PERFECT Christmas gift.

It’s a recipe box!! Better yet, it has the recipe for the guacamole she makes that I always rave about. Gad! That girl blows me away regularly with how thoughtful she is. I’m happy to know her. Even happier to have our friendship.

2.

Curious Notions has been a little quiet, I admit but again, I working night job which leaves me a little uninspired unless I’m dreaming about food. Which leads me to: I’ve been blogging almost daily on Girl Eats World.

3.

The whole Sandra Bullock being cheated on created a lot of buzz and conversation about cheating and “the other woman” in my circles of people. I’ve been listening and polling people’s take on the moral culpability of the other woman. I found a higher percentage than I expected of my sampling that believe the other woman is not one ounce morally culpable because she is not the one cheating. That boggles my mind. While I see that there is not a direct relationship between other woman and woman in the relationship, I still find it wrong. As a subscriber of Thomas Hobbes’s version of contractarianism, my moral compass is guided on whether I would want an action done onto me. I will not poach on your man because I don’t want you to poach mine. Just as Hobbes’s contractarianism would suggest that “person A gives up his/her right to kill person B if person B does the same” (see Wikipedia link on Social Contracts). So for the record, this is where I stand. Where do you stand?

4.

I like rewards. I have a miles reward credit card and a cash reward credit card. I have a movies reward membership. I like getting something back for doing something I was already going to do. Which leads me to my plug for Swagbucks.com. Swagbucks is a search engine I use that rewards me points to shop with. I’ve earned 60 dollars worth of Amazon gift cards so far with only two referrals (Thanks Thomas & Mary Ellen!) and thought why not share/plug. It’s really easy to earn points. All you do is use their search engine (no downloads or credit cards necessary) and the search engine is powered by the titan, Google. Please consider using my link if you try it out :).

5.

Ever wonder how narcissistic you are? There’s a quiz at psychcentral that claims to gage how narcissistic you are. It breaks down your scores by grading you on individual traits that make up a narcissistic personality.

Here’s a snippet of my results:

Your Total: 6
Between 12 and 15 is average.
Celebrities often score closer to 18.
Narcissists score over 20.

How I scored a sum of 6:
I got 3 points for Authority.

Authority refers to a person’s leadership skills and power. People who score higher on authority like to be in charge and gain power, often for power’s sake alone.

I got 2 points for Exploitativeness.

This trait refers to how willing you are to exploit others in order to meet your own needs or goals.

I scored a 1 in Entitlement.

This trait refers to the expectation and amount of entitlement a person has in their lives, that is, unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with one’s expectations. People who score higher on this trait generally have a greater expectation of entitlement, while those who score lower expect little from others or life.

These scores worry me a little. (Why am I just a 6 when an average person scores 12?)

These scores comfort me a little. (Well, I’m not a Narcissist.)

These scores surprise me a little. The other qualities that make a Narcissistic personality I scored zeros on. A zero in Self-Sufficiency, (But I pay my own bills, am not a clingy girlfriend, or freak out when I have to go somewhere and/or socialize by myself. I think I’m pretty self-sufficient!) I scored zeros on Superiority (I agree), Vanity (I agree), and Exhibitionism (really? I have 2 active blogs and 2 active twitters. I tell people when I need to pee!)

Now you do it. And report back!

6.

I have major wanderlust. Still. Itch itch itch.

7.

I wanted to save the best thing for last. On my 20 minute walk from my car this morning to my building, I walked past a telephone can! There is an official and legitimate telephone can set on campus! I’ve always wanted to do this as a child and now I can. I just gotta go back with someone. The other can was across a little creek. How exciting is this?!?!?! Friends, bf, little: be ready to be solicited by me for an old school telephone conversation.

talk to me!

Open letter to parking lot asshole

asshole

Dear owner of this car,

You’re an asshole douche.

No love,
Linda

1.

Last week, a huge dust bunny appeared in our stairwell at work. A few days later, a sign went up.

RIP dust bunny

RIP DUST BUNNY

This tickled me so greatly, I thought I’d share. Also, it’s now almost been two weeks and both sign and dust bunny are still there.

2.

A few days ago at my night job, someone was chatting us girls up when he interrupted himself and said, “There’s a cow in the parking lot.” None of us believed him. I know I live in Texas ya’ll but
really I haven’t seen any cows up close and personal except for in the first grade on a field trip. I spot them from far away when I drive from Austin to Houston but no cows have I seen in either city. The dude was right though. There was a cow in our parking lot! I snuck out there and got as close as I could muster and snapped a picture for you. It didn’t happen unless I have a picture to prove it.

COW!

3.

The ladies at my night job and I are doing a potluck Monday night and the theme is Italian night. I work a full time day job so it’ll be best to do something that doesn’t need to be refrigerated. I was thinking desserts… Hmm. I would love ideas if you have any.

4.

Sunday, Jamie and I have a cooking date. We’re going to tackle making fried dumplings! The recipe will be from a cookbook I won from SteamyKitchen.com at TECHmunch, the food blogging workshop I mentioned last week for 7 Quick Takes.

5.

My layout at GirlEatsWorld.curious-notions.net is generating a lot of overhead. I don’t know what that means other than it spits out an internal error and I have to contact our domain host to “optimize” it. This means I’m now in the market for another layout which makes me sad because I really enjoy the layout that I have. Go ahead and take a peek at it before it goes away… That blog has become my baby.

6.

I miss Houston. I’m going for a weekend in a couple of weeks for my Daddy’s birthday. I cannot wait to see some Houston friends, eat some Houston foods, eat Momma food, and take my dad out to a birthday brunch at my most favorite restaurant.

7.

I’ve reached my saving’s goal for a year’s worth of emergency fund. Now I need to make a few more new goals. I’m thinking I might try to dabble in stocks which is a daunting task for me. I own a total of one stock. And that is Google. That’s the extent of my experience. Ha! Also, am waiting for my free 2,500 Continental miles to kick in from doing a buddy a favor and opening a Chase bank account. I wanna see a little bit more of the world, please.

Tip: Save Your Bingo Paper

Tip: Save your Bingo paper. I’ve used it a couple of times now to wrap gifts. Pictured below is my wrapping of Brandi’s birthday gift.

bingo paper or gift wrap paper?

The purple bow was saved from a box of chocolates I got for Valentine’s day. I like being green!

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

So I’m really cheesy. Really cheesy. The more overtly festive and celebratory I can make my life, the better. This includes wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day. I’m actually contemplating wearing my super cheesy green IRELAND shirt tomorrow at work where I’m still relatively new. I work with a bunch of cool hipsters. I’m a little hesitant. But I’m leaning towards OH YES I’M GOING TO HAPPILY ROCK THIS SHIRT TOMORROW. Here’s a preview. Yes, those are shamrock sleeping shorts. No, I won’t be wearing those to work. Yes, I’ll change into another shirt to sleep in if I decide to wear my IRELAND shirt to work. Yes, my hair is wet and I’m wearing my sexy eye wear. WHAT?

I realized after I already resized and cropped this photo, that I’m covering up the lettering. Doh.

So I try for round 2! Better…

But since I’ve gone this far already, why not flip the image so you can read the text? Ha :)

Okay okay, I’m going to go to bed now. It’s 1 am.

Do you wear green on St. Patty’s day? Drink green beer? How do you celebrate?

Case of the Mondays

twitter status

I’m groggy. I’m cranky.

So I’m trying to budget OUT 400 dollars a month to engage in a weekly activity I think may be beneficial to me. Hence the trying to bring lunches and dinners to work. Extra 400 is kind of tough with all the other miscellaneous expenditures (yes, I really needed those Conan tickets and yes, all weekend celebrating my roommate’s birthday IS necessary, dammit. Finally, I DID call my dentist to make sure they take my new dental insurance but they ended up charging me for that visit anyway.) Needless to say, I had to cancel next week’s appointment til further notice.

On to happier things, some happy photos from this past weekend.

We went to the Bacon Takedown yesterday! As part of my birthday gift to her.

Happy Ides of March, ya’ll. How was your weekend?

7 Quick Takes Friday (vol 3)

1.

Today is Brandi’s birthday. We have a full weekend of birthday activities planned that include a bacon SXSW event and maybe rock climbing! I’ve had some pretty amazing adventures with Miss Brandi (can’t beat skydiving) and have enjoyed living with her this year. Lots of roommate bonding that may or may not include lots of ice cream, episodes of Ally McBeal, extremely candid conversations, and beauty nights! Sadly, she’s moving to Dallas after our lease is up :(

2.

Brandi’s a cake decorator. She’s made a couple of birthday cakes for me. Pictured below are my 24th birthday cake and my 26th birthday cake.

I was feeling the pressure when making her cake last night. I’m a complete novice. I had her help me shave the top of the cake off for me so it was even to ice. Then I experimented with my first piping experience. Brandi has all sorts of tips in her cupboard of baking supplies but intimidated, I thought I’d just cut a hole in a bag and use that.

Ummm. It’s not as effortless as people (namely, Brandi) make it look! I just never got full command and control over how the icing would come out. The lettering looks as if I’m still learning how to write. Poor Brandi!

3.

There’s a superstition on the University of Texas at Austin campus that if you see an albino squirrel, you’ll have success on your next test. I’ve never come across one as an actual college student but I had my second sighting since working on the campus this week. Both sightings were on 24th Street. The first time I scared it away with my camera. This time we practically had a photo shoot. Here are my two favorite pictures.

4.

It’s also Thomas’s birthday this weekend. We’ve been friends going on 10 years now. Since graduating college, he’s lived in Taiwan, Dallas, and now Los Angeles. He hasn’t lived in Austin for about 5 years now and I’m so thankful that we still manage to remain great friends despite being miles apart. You might also notice, I use a lot of his photos on my blog. Happy early birthday to him too!

5.

I was getting my afternoon coffee on campus when I saw this post-it on the wall.

I like the message and I think it’s true for everyone. There are people who would kill for your job. Your family. Your health. Your friends. The fact that you have a car. No matter who we are, we all have blessings worth treasuring.

6.

As always I keep my reading plate full. Currently am reading One for the Money (This month’s book club selection), How to Save Your Own Life (because I really love Erica Jong), The Last Lecture (because it was 5 dollars at Half Priced Books), and still working through Stumbling on Happiness (because Nam recommended it ages ago).

7.

On a whim, I signed up for my first food blogging workshop that is part of SXSW. I did this without looking at the roster of attendees and boy after studying the roster, I have to say I’m intimidated. I feel like the lowly water boy who dreams to be good enough just to warm the bench! That said, as nervous as I am and as much as I feel like I’m out of my league, I’m excited to soak in these big food bloggers energies.

Go to the Movies by Yourself

There’s something really comforting and cozy about sitting on a couch even by yourself and enjoying a movie. Perhaps under a blanket or while mindlessly munching on popcorn as you vicariously get taken to another world by way of cinema. Particularly when things are tough, watching a movie can quiet and dull all sorts of mind chatter and heartache. I remember after a particularly bad break up several years ago, I kept a movie log (surprise, surprise, I log everything) and my movie count for an entire summer ran over EIGHTY movies. Kym accompanied me once that summer to Blockbuster and to my utter embarrassment, the Blockbuster dude told her to take me out.

All that said, what about going to the movies by yourself? I’ve been doing this for years and cannot remember the first movie I saw by myself. Sporadically, I have opened up about this solo activity of mine and am often reacted to with shock and or involuntary pity and always with curiosity. “Don’t you feel like a loser?” gets asked often. My answer is no. I have only one stipulation I place on myself out of insecurity and that is to avoid Friday and Saturday nights. Those are the only times I feel self-conscious. Otherwise, it feels very indulgent. I even break out date night outfits to make it more of a treat. So there you have it, I’m a proponent for going out to the movies solo every once in a while.

Some advantages of going to the movies on your own

  • Feels just like you’re watching a movie in your living room but with a much, much bigger screen.
  • No awkward reach overs to share popcorn. It’s all yours!
  • If you avoid Friday and Saturday evenings, a movie theatre provides a very quiet haven to just sit and be before your movie starts.
  • You don’t have to have a date to wear a date outfit. (I wore my sparkly headband last night.)

Question: Have you been to the movies by yourself? If so, what have you seen?

P.S. Saw An Education last night. A WONDERFUL film. I give it 4.5 stars out of 5.

Book Review: The Pleasure of My Company

I love Steve Martin as a writer. Back in 2005, I read Shopgirl in one sitting and was taken by his gentle, quiet and comforting handle on prose. This past New Year’s Eve, I was eating dinner with Alan and his friend Andrew before a night out. Over dinner, Andrew and I traded notes on favorite books and he mentioned how he really loved Steve Martin’s books and cited The Pleasure of My Company as his absolute favorite book. Using, Shopgirl as my measuring stick, I didn’t doubt that I was going to be pleased.

That said, Steve Martin totally exceeded my expectations! He composes a story about a man named Daniel, a neurotic genius with amusing, outlandish, and endearing compulsions. For instance, he needs to have a certain amount of wattage lit in his house (1250 watts if memory serves?) and has a fear of crossing curbs. A pretty isolated person who is literally held prisoner in his home by his neuroses, he manages to have tiny windows open that made it possible to meet no more than a handful of people. These select people eventually draw him of his world and expand it.

Martin gives us more access to the characters in this novella than he did in Shopgirl (In hindsight, he kept the characters in Shopgirl a little at arm’s length) which made me grow to care for each of them (most especially, Daniel). I found myself rooting for him, hoping for him, and finally applauding for him.

My Two Favorite Excerpts

“What if during the entire trip I would not allow myself to speak any word that contained the letter e? This is the kind of enormous duty that could supersede and dominate my other self-imposed tasks. I quickly scanned my vocabulary for useful words- a, an, am, was, is, for, against, through- and found enough there to make myself understood. Thus “let’s eat” would become, “I’m hungry, baby! Chow down!” I couldn’t say “I love you,” but I could say, “I’m crazy about you,” which was probably a better choice anyway.

“I thought of the names in and around the magic square. I thought of their astounding number, both in the present and past, of ***** and *****, of *****, of *****, even of my father, whose disavowal of me led to this place, and I understood that as much as I had resisted the outside, as much as I had constricted my life, as much as I had closed and narrowed the channels into me, there were still many takers for the quiet heart. ”

(names blacked out to not spoil anything :))
